One would almost think that Kötschach-Mauthen has a millennium hiking tradition. Even the Romans hiked north along the old "Via-Iulia-Augusta" over the "Carnic Alps" and "Gailtal Alps". Here in the Gailtal, it's not just the breathtaking nature that makes us one of the most attractive hiking regions in Europe. It is the unique combination of geology, botany, alpine history and also the historical influences (front zone in the First World War) that made this alpine melting pot something very special. It is not for nothing that this part of the Carnic Alps should be nominated as a "UNESCO WORLD NATURAL HERITAGE".

The Mauthner Klamm is one of the most beautiful gorges in Austria with its up to 200 meter high, almost touching rock walls, numerous suspension bridges, tunnels hewn into the rock and impressive climbs. The gorge consists of 2 parts. The first part is the gorge hiking trail. From the holy grave follows the Klabautersteig.
The Klabautersteig is a complete sensation for adventurous families. The path not only leads along the rocks, but also crosses the creek beds. However, the climbers of the Mauthner Gorge should not be afraid of water, because the path leads partly through knee-deep water. For children but also for adults, the Klabautersteig is a huge adventure and a lot of fun.
